About Biolevel
Our founders had a vision early on that set us apart, followed by diligent efforts to turn it into a reality.
Our Story
It all began with a question: Can we bring the vitality of soil back to life in modern farming practices? Our founders knew natural biology held the key to reinvigorating the soil and boosting yields, but no suitable product yet existed that could serve large-scale agriculture.
And, while extremely beneficial to on-farm productivity and yields over time, synthetic fertilizers and pesticides had a detrimental effect on natural soil biology. Was there a way to create effective, natural biologicals that could work with modern inputs to create both strong yields and healthier soils? Existing biological products didn’t offer consistent performance under the logistical, environmental and agronomic stresses of real-world farming situations. And even new, yield-promising hybrids and varieties were unable to reach their potential, not due to lack of synthetic inputs — but a decline in soil health.
Through passion and persistence, Biolevel created the solution. Curiosity inspired our beginning and has driven every innovation since.
Our Vision
To lead mainstream, worldwide biological product use in conventional, organic and regenerative agriculture to boost sustainable food production, increase farm productivity and restore soil health.
Our Mission
To help farmers meet the nutritional needs of a growing population and surpass financial goals of their operation through lasting biological solutions.
Creating Better Solutions
Biolevel™ brand products are designed and developed to be the most convenient, consistent and robust bionutrition solutions on the market.
Biolevel understood that growers needed biological products that could. reintroduce highly evolved, robust, beneficial soil biology to their fields to immediately improve nutrient cycling and uptake to improve soil health over time. But they also needed them in formulations that could survive the rigors of the commercial supply chain and perform as consistently and conveniently as synthetic fertilizers, chemicals and other inputs. The solution couldn’t just be easy-to-use or effective – it had to be unbreakable.
Biolevel succeeded in developing its portfolio of products with the following non-negotiable features:
- A biodiverse, multi-strain consortium of beneficial bacteria rather than a single- or dual-strain.
- Multiple modes of action to generate N, P, K and micronutrients from the soil, not just N.
- Ultimate convenience, i.e. no refrigeration, long (24-month) shelf-life, and no need for on-farm mixing or fermenting.
- Able to be applied with existing input regimes on farm, including crop protection, fertilizer, biostimulant and seed coating inputs.
- Effective across all crops, all soils, and in all conditions.
- Deliver ultrahigh volumes of colony forming units (CFUs) without limiting other inputs.
- Create value and greater ROI opportunities for farmers.
- Large-scale production capacity suitable for broad distribution.
Today, Biolevel is commercially recommended and distributed by major retailers and distribution partners on three continents with three product types: MaizeNP™ biofertilizer for corn, PhosN™ biofertilizer for soybeans, and GramaxNP™ for cereal grains (coming soon to North America).
Extensive field trials demonstrate Biolevel enables growers to push the yield curve above their standard practice or maintain and — in some cases – increase yield levels with reduced N.
Research and Trials
Biolevel consistently outperforms single- and dual-strain products, those which have not undergone years of selective development for synergy, robustness and stability, and products which focus solely on nitrogen or phosphorous without impacting overall soil health. Following multiple years of North American trials, we’re excited about the results we see in our clients’ fields.
2006
Research begins with selectively bred microbes on horticulture and amenity grass crops to build a foundation for Biolevel technology.
2014
First generation of Biolevel PhosN is made available as a soluble powder.
2016
Biolevel LLC is created. The Royal Agrifirm Group (Netherlands) begins a three-year efficacy trial on Biolevel PhosN in potatoes. Results are extremely positive.
2019
Following three years of successful trials by Royal Agrifirm Group, Biolevel PhosN is launched in Europe.
2021
Biolevel is selected for the following incubators: FoodBytes! (Top 3 Finalist), Cultivo and RootCamp. Biolevel products obtain registration in Canada and Kenya.
2023
Biolevel PhosN Soluble Powder obtains OMRI (organic) approval.
What's Next
Biolevel is engaging in multiyear efficacy demonstration trials with leading global university collaborators and seed, fertilizer and ag-chem companies to demonstrate our product efficacy, with intent to launch products in additional row crops and fruits and vegetables in 2025 and 2026.
1990s
Ian Robertson initiates foundational microbial and soil science research.
2012
Research focuses on methods to deliver viable microbial products in the agricultural sector: a multistrain, synergistic consortium with highly consistent results, unbreakable efficacy, and ease-of-use. Ian Robertson and his microbiology team collaborate to bring their ideas from horticulture to food crops.
2015
Independent field-scale trial work is initiated with Bangor University and Hartpury College to conduct efficacy trials on Biolevel products for agricultural use. These trials provided the first independent verification of product efficacy and potentially significant commercial impact.
2017
The U.S. EPA determines that Biolevel microbes do not need to be registered as a pesticide, based on statistically significant academic trial data which “satisfactorily demonstrated evidence of a significant commercially valuable use.”
2020
Biolevel starts a development partnership with Certis Belchim (UK) for a liquid seed coating for cereals. WinField United (USA) requests Biolevel to develop a formulation for soybeans. Cereal, corn and soybean field trials are initiated in the UK and North America.
2022
Biolevel adds a dry planter box treatment (talc replacement with biology) to its lineup for corn. Broad-scale field efficacy trials begin with university and industry collaborators in North America.
2024
Commercial-scale launch of MaizeNP (corn) and PhosN (soybeans) in North America with WinField United (USA), Sollio Agromart (Canada) and other distribution partners. Commercial-scale launch of Biolevel formulations for cereals with Certis Belchim (UK). Biolevel MaizeNP Soluble Powder obtains OMRI approval.
